New music: Queen of Hearts – Freestyle
Annie, Goldfrapp and Kylie all rolled into one synth-pop song. We approve Queen of Hearts is the moniker of one British lady whose real name we don’t know because she’s so damn new. In fact, there aren’t any songs of hers floating about the internet and the above track is an exclusive full-length stream of the only one we’ve heard, the glacial Freestyle. Mixing the cool vocal detachment of Annie with the electro throb of Black Cherry-era Goldfrapp, Freestyle struts around like Kylie, all sighing melodies and synth explosions. If only she was in the process of making some ridiculous video statement to go with it too you say? Oh, she is . Keep an eye on this one. Apparat’s new album out today
Perhaps Apparat and Modeselektor spent so much time on the road together, touring as Moderat, that their cycles synched up. What else could explain the fact that both artists have new albums out in the very same week? (See here for an interview with Modeselektor about their new LP, Monkeytown .) Released on the pioneering Mute label, Apparat’s The Devil’s Walk finds the Berlin producer expanding his sound like never before, fleshing out his glitchy rhythms with swelling orchestral parts and an even greater emphasis on yearning vocals. The single ”Song of Los” appeared a few weeks ago, and features additional remixes by Mogwai and Park Frequency; check it out here , and get The Devil’s Walk on Beatport here . Wolfgang Gartner on Medusa, disco, and why Ibiza is the Las Vegas of Europe
I first met Wolfgang Gartner when we shared a van from Las Vegas’ Cosmopolitan hotel out to the site of the Electric Daisy Carnival, and I quickly got the sense that he didn’t want to talk to me. It was the little things that gave him away—like responding to my first questions with curtly monosyllabic answers, and then simply leaning his head down on his backpack, wedged against the van window, and making a visible display of power-napping. I got the hint: just hours away from show-time, he was in no mood to talk. Turns out I had him all wrong, though. When I ran across him a few nights later, back by the artist trailers, he couldn’t have been more welcoming. (Note to self: remember not to bug the artists mere hours before they go on stage.) Read on for the full interview, and check out Gartner’s new album Weekend in America on Beatport here . Read more on Beatportal Läs mer

Arthur Russell: Let’s Go Swimming
Nearly two decades after Arthur Russell ‘s death, his catalog continues to grow. The New York composer and avant-disco icon left behind a wealth of material, filling box after box of tapes with sketches, dubs, and alternate versions, and thanks to the archival work of labels like Steve Knutsen’s Audika —founded in 2004 to introduce Russell’s music to new generations of listeners—the best of that material continues to find its way to our ears. The latest addition to the canon is a newly remastered edition of his classic ” Let’s Go Swimming .” When it was originally released, in 1986, it was clear that Russell was sailing deep into uncharted waters, as far as dance music was concerned. ”A lot of DJs take the tapes I make and try to make them into something more ordinary,” Russell told David Toop. ”‘Let’s Go Swimming’ was supposed to be a futuristic summer record. Some DJs said that nobody would ever, ever play that. I think eventually that kind of thing will be commonplace.” Judging from the present day’s bountiful supply of Balearic house, nu-disco, chillwave and other ”futuristic summer” sounds, Russell was indeed right. The reissue includes all three versions of ”Let’s Go Swimming”—Russell’s own ”Gulf Stream Dub” and ”Puppy Surf Dub” as well as Walter Gibbons ‘ mind-bending ”Coastal Dub.” (Gibbons also put together the song’s accompanying video, armed with a VHS recorder and copious nature-show footage.) As a bonus, the EP also includes the previously unreleased ”Make 1, 2 (Gem Spa Dub),” an 11-minute slice of blissed-out funk. Check it out on Beatport here . Watch this video on Beatportal Läs mer

Artists to Watch 2011: Jacques Renault
Jacques Renault —yes, that is his real name, a fact that goes some way towards explaining the Brooklynite’s effortless cool—turned out one of our very favorite cuts of 2010 with his remix of Midnight Magic’s ”Beam Me Up.” Runaway , his duo with Marcos Cabral , has been at the forefront of the new-school old-school house scene for a couple of years now, thanks to their records for Rekids , Permanent Vacation , Endless Flight , I’m A Cliche, Spectral Sound , and labels of a similar ilk. And Runaway’s On The Prowl label is quickly becoming a buy-on-sight affair, at least for fans of deep, emotive house and inventive disco. The attitude is old-school, the ideas enduring—all of which might explain why we couldn’t resist including Renault in our artists-to-watch roundup for 2011. Just like his namesake, this dude is going places. Read more on Beatportal Läs mer
